NSS (Nair Service Society) in Bahrain was started in the year 1982 by members interested in keeping their social and cultural background intact and to undertake Charitable Services among community members and other Indian expatriates in Bahrain. The association mainly represents members of the Nair community from Kerala and elsewhere in India. Nair community being the most forward and vibrant community in Kerala having major stake in social, cultural, economical, scientific and technical and political field, the founding members effort was to keep the tradition and continue efforts to serve the community and general society in development. The contribution of Nair community under the leadership of late Mr. Mannath Padmanabhan in developing schools and colleges across Kerala to impart modern education to people of Kerala is well recognized.

Many of the founding members have already left the island after working here for many years. Some of the founding members are still working in Kingdom of Bahrain. Over the years the association has grown in to a 300 strong members association. Some of the prominent members of the association who are actively involved for many years are Mr. A. Anilkumar, Mr. S M Pillai, Mr. V.V Mohan, Mr. J.P Mohanan Pillai, Mr. Pambavasan Nair, Mr. V.K Rajasekharan Pillai, Mr. G.K Nair, Mr. P.V Radhakkrishna Pillai, Mr. Raghunathan Nair, Mr. P Sureshkumar, Mr. V.R Vishwanathan, Mr. C.P Prabhakaran, Mr. N.R Surendranathan, Mr. C.K Krishnadas, Mr. Kaviyoor Vijayan and Mr. R.M Pillai.

Mr. C.R Nambiar, one of the founder members has recently left Bahrain (2009).

The association was registered under the name Kerala Social & Cultural Association with the Ministry of Labour & Social Affairs in the year 1999. Mr. A.Anilkumar (current PRO), Mr. V.N Gopalakrishnan (then General Secretary) and Mr. V.V Mohan (then President) were instrumental in registering the association for its further strengthening and development. H. E. Shaikha Hind Bint Salman Al Khalifa, then undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs inaugurated the association office premises at Guadaibya in January 2000.

In addition to social and cultural activities the association has undertaken many Charitable Services to help Indian community members having difficulties in Bahrain, repatriation of dead bodies, organize medical camp for labourers, organized blood donation camps, visited geriatric ward to console the inmates, participated in charitable activities for the benefit of the Palestinian people, undertaken charitable projects in Kerala by members to help NGO’s serving destitute women, children and elders besides contributing to fund for national calamities raised by the government of India and various state government in India. 

The annual general assembly of members held in April 2007 has decided to organize a year long celebration to mark this important milestone in the evolution of NSS in Bahrain. Leadership for the celebration was provided by then president Mr. J.P Mohanan Pillai, General Secretary V.R Vishwanathan, Convener Mr. V.V Mohan and PRO Mr. A. Anilkumar. The Silver jubilee celebration was a renewal of our commitment to social and charitable causes while we continue to contribute to the development of Kingdom of Bahrain and our home state Kerala while protecting our culture and tradition, adapting to the changing global scenario.
